WHY PROTECT COATINGS

WHAT IS INTRUMESCENT COATING?

Intumescent coating is a passive fire protection system applied to structural steel or timber. When exposed to heat, the coating expands to form an insulating char layer that delays structural failure — buying critical time for building evacuation and firefighting.

All Protech intumescent applications are carried out to the fire engineering specification and NZ Building Code requirements. We work directly with fire engineers, project managers, and consent authorities to ensure full documentation and sign-off.

OUR SERVICES

INTUMESCENT COATING APPLICATIONS

STRUCTURAL STEEL

Thin-film and thick-film intumescent systems applied to exposed and concealed structural steel. We work to any FRR (fire resistance rating) specified by your fire engineer, in any colour specified for architectural steel.

TIMBER & MASS TIMBER

Intumescent coating applied to exposed structural timber including glulam, LVL, and mass timber elements. An increasingly specified solution as architects use more exposed timber in commercial and community buildings.

ARCHITECTURAL FINISHES

Intumescent systems with decorative topcoats for exposed structural steel where aesthetics matter. Smooth finishes suitable for retail, hospitality, and public buildings where the steel is part of the design.

OUR PROCESS

HOW IT WORKS

01

Specification review

We review your fire engineering report and specification before quoting to ensure we understand the exact requirements.

02

Surface preparation

Steel surfaces are prepared to the required standard — typically Sa2.5 abrasive blast or equivalent mechanical preparation.

03

Coating application

Intumescent system applied in controlled conditions to the specified dry film thickness (DFT), with in-process DFT checks throughout.

04

Inspection & sign-off

Post-application inspection with full documentation — DFT readings, product batch numbers, and a written report for building consent sign-off.
